As a subsidiary of L3Harris Technologies and within the Integrated Mission Systems Segment, the WESCAM division develops the most advanced optical sensor and targeting systems for global defense and military sectors, National Security, Search & Rescue and Airborne law enforcement agencies. From long-range covert surveillance missions to search and rescue operations, our MX-series systems, and the mission systems solutions they are a part of, produce stabilized high-magnification electro-optical and infrared images from airborne, marine and ground based platforms, enabling our customers to see first and act first.

About the Role

This is a 16 month co-op term (with 12 month terms occasionally available). This co-op role is an Optics Manufacturing Engineering (ME) person focused on supporting process improvements of MX Product.  Working under general direction and guidance and collaborating with contacts in the Operations Engineering team and Production to explain and interpret information. Contributes to system and process changes and works to achieve operational targets that impact team results. Responsible for making changes in processes to solve problems or improve effectiveness of approaches currently utilized. Achieve operational targets that impact the overall results of team and company efforts by increasing the quality of product and workmanship. Work can range from smaller, less complex projects and tasks to large-scale projects demanding personal innovation. The role includes a mix between hands-on work with frontline responsibilities and independent technical project work.

Primary Responsibilities 

Working in a cross-functional team with engineering, production, manufacturing engineering and procurement, this person is responsible for strategically identifying and tactically implementing improvements of WESCAM product, in accordance with product specifications and quality standards.  The successful candidate will focus on the verification and alignment of optical subassemblies or systems.

  • Lead and participate in assigned projects related to activities within Operations Engineering.
  • Work in partnership with the Optics ME frontline team resolving operational technical issues and developing new optics manufacturing processes.
  • Sustain operational procedures associated with the evaluation, repair, preventative maintenance, calibration, and acceptance test procedure (ATP) of all Optics ME assets.
  • Support translation of product specifications from Engineering to ME and operational procedures.
  • Capture and analyze data related to Production and lab procedures.
  • Support documentation changes, including optics procedures, in the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) authoring.

Required Capabilities 

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities within a Project-based environment.
  • Technical communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Must be well organized, goal-oriented, and able to give attention to detail.
  • Able to collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams across the organization.
  • Able to read and understand mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
  • Experience using SolidWorks, Composer, and AutoCAD an asset, but not required.
  • Experience using programming languages and image processing software considered an asset (e.g. C#, MATLAB, etc.)
  • Experience working with optical assemblies, sensors, electronics, and video processing
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office

Desired Education and Experiences 

  • Currently registered into a co-op program of an accredited College or University program, preferably with focus on Physics, Optics, Photonics, or Electro-optics
