Job Title: Manager, Tactical Communications Model Shop

Job Description:

The Model Shop Manager's responsibilities include managing the Model Shop staff (6 machinists), reviewing and approving timecards, executing performance reviews, and reviewing and approving PTO requests. Oversees the Model Shop Work Order process by logging Model Shop orders, categorizing them by type (Sheet Metal, Lathe, or CNC), distributing work to the team, scheduling third-party suppliers (e.g., painting, plating) for work orders that require these services and coordinates the ordering of tools and materials. Works with the Director of Engineering to prioritize work if needed as well as track productivity and quality metrics on a quarterly basis.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage Model Shop staff (6 machinists)
    • Review/Approve timecards
    • Execute performance reviews
    • Review/approve PTO requests
  • Manage Model Shop Work Order process
    • Log Model shop orders
    • Categorize by type (Sheet Metal, Lathe or CNC)
    • Prioritize and distribute work to the team
    • Schedule 3rd party suppliers (i.e. painting, plating,) for work orders that require these services. Coordinate delivery/receipt of materials.
  • Generate and manage multiple Blanket PO’s for material, tooling, services, etc.
  • Place orders for material, tooling, services, etc. and reconcile receipts, track overall spend
  • Schedule required service and maintenance activities for equipment across the entire model shop
  • Manage all EHS activities including:
    • Monthly EHS 5S audits
    • Weekly inspection of eyewash stations and log results
    • Maintain proper pH levels on the chromate line as well as the OMAX wastewater effluent
  • Support monthly testing by Paradigm (chromate line) as well as unannounced visits from Monroe County
  • Ensure proper PPE is available to team and is being used properly

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum 6 years prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree with a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Experience in the proper use of basic machine shop equipment (drill press, cutoff saw, sanding/grinding)
  • Familiar with chromate finsihing of alumimum parts and the chemistry behid it.
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office tools especially Microsoft Excel
  • Experience in programming and setup of both CNC machining centers and/or CNC sheetmetal press brakes
  • Prior Experience in leading and managing individuals within a machine shop environment with strong knowledge of CNC and Sheetmetal fabrication processes. Experience in mantaining a chromate finish line preferred with experience interacting with local authorites to ensure all environmental rules are being met.

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in New York State is $75,000 – 139,000. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
