Job Description:
Our site near Culpeper, VA, in beautiful, rural Orange County (1.5 hours from Washington, DC) is growing! This site is our center of excellence for Solid Rocket Motor Propulsion and Energetics development as well as high-complexity production programs.
Position will support Energetics and Propellant Development. A wide application of advanced principles, theories and concepts in the propulsion field with a working knowledge of other related disciplines, such as thermal, structural, and ballistics analysis. Develops solutions to unique or controversial problems which have an important effect on major company programs. Typically, incumbents will have contributed inventions, new designs or techniques which are of significance to the solution of complex technical problems.
Essential Functions:
- Contributes to the development of new methods or processes which require complete knowledge of chemistry and laboratory techniques.
- Performs testing using established specifications and procedures
- Compiles and evaluates test results.
- Prepares reports to document findings and recommendations as to processes, materials and projects.
- Reviews and approves related inputs such as tests and experiments conducted by other laboratory personnel
- Coordinates with personnel in other disciplines to integrate findings and recommendations.
- Evaluate and implement tractable solutions to technical problems involving the utilization of chemistry and chemical analysis techniques.
- Responsible for specifying chemical testing and evaluating data, providing chemical guidance and planning (technical), organizing (cost and schedule), and conducting technical projects covering a broad range of technical topics under the guidance of a Technical Project Lead (Technical Fellow or equivalent).
- Develop, plan, and promote projects independently for the implementation of novel technical approaches and cutting edge technologies.
- Consolidate results, prepare findings for reports.
- Pertinent codes, rules, and regulations related to areas of assignments.
- Principles of Good Laboratory Practices and Protocols.
- Use of chemical laboratory process and test equipment, specialized analytical equipment, and various computer/software systems.
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or other specialized testing protocols.
- Principles of chemistry, mathematics, statistics, mechanics, and physics, and the ability to relate these to laboratory assignments.
- Quality assurance protocols and general laboratory safety.
- Safety and health standards (OSHA and CALOSHA Laboratory Standard) related to laboratory testing procedures and practices.
- Computers and applicable software.
- Effectively communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
- Conduct laboratory testing in accordance with approved work instructions.
- Analyze and interpret results of laboratory testing, keep records, and prepare accurate reports of laboratory activities.
- Interpret and apply specific cases, provisions of laws, rules, or regulations encountered at work.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
- Independently develop and administer unique testing and research techniques and methods.
- Independently develop novel concepts and technical approaches for the purpose of improving/creating opportunities.
- Maintain a variety of test and research records.
- Ability to obtain a DOD US security clearance.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree with minimum 2 years of prior material process engineer experience. Graduate Degree with a minimum of 0 - 2years of prior material process engineering experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 6 years of prior material process engineering experience.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Degree in Chemistry, Material Science or related science and technical experience in the chemistry environment.
- Knowledge of chemical principles, thermodynamics, polymer chemistry, structure/property relationships, kinetics, and data analysis is essential.
- Experience with energetic materials, statistical analysis, programming, and experimental set-up and data acquisition is a plus.
- Explosives theory, compositions, and modeling is desired.
