About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineer to support and optimize optical thin film coating processes. This role is responsible for sustaining production, improved yields, troubleshooting coating defects and driving continuous improvement initiatives across the coating department.

The ideal candidate is hands-on, data driven, and comfortable working independently in a fast-paced manufacturing environment involving precision optical components.

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Support regularly occurring cell team activities in the coating department: Daily Whiteboard, MRB (material review board), Equipment related troubleshooting with OEM and in-house millwright.
  • Support root cause investigation on production failures and customer returns.
  • Collaborate with coating designer on NPI (New Product Introduction) projects by ensuring a smooth transition of newly developed products into a full-scale production environment (Manufacturability Reviews, RCCA, Yield).
  • Continually monitor processes stability and make continuous improvement recommendations.
  • Assist Procurement, Design, Material and QA departments in root cause investigations and technical support.
  • Undertake and update various projects simultaneously, based on priority set by supervisor, while having the ability to bring projects to closure in a timely fashion.
  • Work in partnership with the coating designer to design and perform experiments and testing
  • Collaborate with cross functional team across the business.

Required Capabilities

  • Knowledgeable about optical thin film coating processes and coating chamber preparation:
    • Electron Beam Deposition,
    • Thermal Evaporator Deposition
    • Ion Assisted Deposition
    • Quartz Crystal Monitoring
    • Optical Monitoring System
    • Any experience with sputtering is considered an asset
  • Ability to operate spectrophotometer and support metrology
  • Excellent technical communication skills
  • Solid presentation and effective communication skills
  • Understands when to apply a sense of urgency
  • Strong problem solving aptitude
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel)
  • Experience with Essential Macleod
  • Highly motivated and have a teamwork mindset

Desired Education and Experiences 

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Undergraduate degree in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering and or equivalent.
  • Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
  • Greenbelt certification or lean manufacturing experience is considered an asset
  • Prior experience in coating is an asset.

*This posting is for a current vacancy.  In the province of Ontario, Canada, the salary range for this position will be $80,000-120,000.
