The Portfolio Engineering Manager (MSI) will lead a team of Technical Authorities/Lead Engineers, who are responsible for developing and maintaining the technology, products and services within the Mission Systems Integration Portfolio. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the focus of this role is engineering project delivery and supporting MSI Portfolio leadership to build and grow a sustainable portfolio, ensuring that portfolio strategies are effectively implemented, process are optimised, and teams are scaled to ensure high-quality systems, software and data solutions are delivered and maintained.

What the role will involve
The responsibilities of your role will include the following:
Team Leadership & Management
- Manage, mentor, and grow a team of cross-functional engineers and developers.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture aligned with business & portfolio goals.
- Operate in the grey areas (i.e. without customer requirements) using experience and customer and business inputs to maintain momentum.
- Manages the plan to drive capability maturity, not just task allocation.
Technical Oversight
- Oversee the development and maintenance of portfolio products, services and tools.
- Ensure teams are delivering reliability and quality into systems and products on time and on budget.
- Guide and mentor the team on system design, architecture, and technology choices.
- Make technical decisions that serve portfolio & business outcomes.
- Support the MSI Portfolio vision, captured in mission road maps, ensuring solutions are technically fit-for-purpose and commercially viable.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Act as a liaison between MSI stakeholders and the engineering delivery teams.
- Translate Mission Roadmaps and investment strategy, identifying technical gaps to generate technical requirements and solutions.
Project & Portfolio Management
- Prioritise team workload in alignment with business objectives.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery and risk mitigation.
- Report progress to senior leadership and adapt plans as needed.
- Ensure quality in all engineering deliverables including Bids, Research & Development projects, Gates and Reviews etc.
- Risk management and effective delivery
- Proactively identify / mitigate risks and dependencies between projects and on critical resources.
- Build capacity in the team to maximise agility and speed.
Growth in capacity
- Manages the plan to drive capability maturity, not just task allocation.
- Builds cross-functional redundancy that reduces dependence on critical points of success, through succession planning and strong team culture.
What you’ll bring
Essential Requirements for the Role:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field.
- 7+ years of experience in system engineering, software engineering or data science, preferably within the defence industry.
- 2+ years of experience managing technical teams and leading cross-functional projects.
- Excellent communication both oral and written.
- Strong bid experience with an ability to generate innovative solutions and a proven track record of generating winning proposals.
- Proven ability in System of Systems Engineering to understand capability objectives, analyse constituent systems and develop and evolve the solution architecture, addressing complex challenges that cannot be solved by a single, standalone system.
- Proven ability in Software Architecting with a deep understanding of software development principles, design patterns for various technologies and systems. Ability to analyse complex problems and propose effective solutions acting as the visionary technical leader with a proven track record delivering high quality software solutions.
