Job Description: The Manufacturing Technician D is an advanced-level professional with the expectation to have highly developed painting and fabrication knowledge that will translate to an immediate impact on meeting production needs. Manufacturing technicians within the prototype machine shop are responsible for coating the surface of parts, assemblies, and finished products with MIL-spec, protective paint using spray guns and brushes. They select and mix coating material to match drawing requirements. Additionally, they are expected to support machine shop tasks which consist of fabrication (Assembly, Sawing, Drilling, Bending, Grinding, Deburring, Labeling, etc.), sheet metal forming, milling (CNC and manual), lathe turning (CNC and manual), laser cutting, CMM* inspecting, EDM, welding, chemical processing (Alodine), 3D printing, and machine maintenance.
Essential Functions:
- Mask, coat and finish surfaces on parts as defined by manufacturing work instructions, and engineering drawings
- Sand using proper equipment and appropriate sandpaper grit
- Perform touch up repair on customer parts, which requires selecting and mixing coating materials to obtain the closest matching surface appearance possible
- Work with a variety of materials such as aluminum, steel, and stainless-steel materials in plate, sheet, bar, and structural forms; more rarely, brass and copper; plastics such as PTFE, Delrin, and Acrylic.
- Fabricate, modify, and assemble parts as defined by drawings, CAD files, sketches
- Set-up and operation of a variety of manufacturing and fabrication equipment using the programs and tooling specified
- Apply and interpret GD&T tolerances
- Calculate and verify dimensions against tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers, vernier calipers, gauges, etc.
- Assess workload across multiple work centers and prioritize work according to business need, quantity, batching efficiency, age of work, and supervisor direction
- Responsible for recording all work operations performed, non-conformances and inputting other specifications into computer-based programs
- Perform preventive maintenance on machines
- Maintain work area to 5S + 1 standards
- Train team members on job responsibilities as needed
- Follow company P&P and mentor others to always uphold the highest standards
- Support overtime (extended hours, weekends, holidays) as needed
- Other responsibilities as assigned by management
Required Qualifications (one of the following):
- High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience
- 2 years post-Secondary/Associates Degree with a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience
Preferred Additional Skills:
- A qualification or formal training on painting metals / plastics
- A qualification in a machining environment or professional training on machine tools
- 4+ years of recent (within last 8 years) experience in reading and modifying G-code
- 4+ years of recent (within last 8 years) experience in adjusting Feeds and Speeds
- 4+ years of recent (within last 8 years) experience in operating CNC machines
- Requires highly developed knowledge/skills on job responsibilities listed above
- Flexibility to receive on-the-job training to acquire essential certifications, which may require adjusting work schedule to accommodate training times
- Experience working intricate tasks requiring application of advanced-level knowledge, concepts and techniques
- Aptitude to work autonomously and independently with little to no prompting from supervisor
- Confidence to explain facts and practices related to job area in preparation for area audits
- Experience collaborating with a team to resolve difficult assignments and problems
- Act as a mentor to peers and provide guidance on tasks
- Demonstrated experience being a strong contributor towards operational goals by making process improvement, new procedure, and training recommendations
- Ability to maintain professional standards of performance, demeanor, and judgment at all times as detailed in company policies and procedures
- Comfortable wearing PPE such as safety glasses and ear plugs for extended period of times
- Physical effort will include standing for extended periods of time and lifting ranging from light to heavy lifting and may include occasional lifting up to 32 lbs.
- Role will include exposure to oils, moderate noise levels, chemical odors, grinding and machining dust and chips, sharp edges and variation in temperature
