Job Description:

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer Manager to manage and direct the day-to-day activities of the Mechanical Engineering Group for the Salt Lake City, UT and Valencia, CA sites. Provide technical direction and oversight to individuals in the group and to program teams. Estimate labor, capacity and other resources as required to operate, adhere to budget and schedule commitments.

This role will lead the mechanical engineering team who is responsible for the mechanical design of the HELRAS and LFATS families of military sonars and associated support equipment.  This role will provide input and recommendations for Internal Research and Development (IRAD) projects and support business growth by researching and responding to customer solicitations.  As time permits, this role may also prepare and present research results on topics of general industry interest at trade conferences or contribute to published trade publication articles.

Specific Duties:

  • Manage and direct the day-to-day activities of the Mechanical Engineering Group and make individual work assignments.

  • Monitor individual performance, goal setting and prepare formal Performance Appraisal Reports.

  • Be capable of executing all the duties of a senior Mechanical Engineer.

  • Serve as a lead engineer responsible for the total Mechanical system design of the HELRAS and LFATS families of military sonars.

  • Provide mechanical engineering support to HELRAS and LFATS production at other L3Harris sites.

  • Provide mechanical engineering support to Salt Lake City, as required, for the MK54, LWWAA, and TB34 Broadband products.

  • Oversee detailed design models and drawings of all HELRAS and LFATS mechanical components using Solidworks and/or CREO.

  • Manage the design and prototype of new components to rapidly test changes and improvements.

  • Ability to technically define and decompose sonar system and functional requirements, document specifications, and identify and architect new requirements.

  • Work closely with operations to transition new designs to production / manufacturing using established company processes.

  • Assist in the testing and qualification of the HELRAS and LFATS as well as implementing and testing all design changes.

  • Experience in designing underwater vessels, tow bodies, and receive arrays.

  • Experience in the application and packaging of underwater cables and connectors.

  • Experience in designing sonar projectors, hydrophones, and arrays in support of product growth / improvements.

  • Experience in designing structures to support printed circuit boards and electronic subsystems.

  • Assist in the development and integration of new transducers to support growth and customer opportunities.

  • Assist purchasing Dept to select vendors for purchased mechanical components.

  • Assist QC Dept to verify compliance of incoming purchased parts with required specs.

  • Manage the engineering input to outside machine shops that will be fabricating components.

  • Interface with customers on behalf of L3Harris Salt Lake City and Valencia Engineering and Business Development

  • 10-20% travel to Valencia Ca

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 9 years prior related experience, Graduate Degree with a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience, or in lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.  

  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD US Secret Security Clearance.

  • Working knowledge of CAD 

  • Knowledge of underwater structure design and analysis, material selection for corrosive marine environments, high pressure seals

  • Design of undersea systems.

  • FEA for structural analysis
