Job Description:
L3Harris’s Optics department in Rochester, NY is seeking an experienced CNC Machinist to produce high-quality optical components for cutting-edge astronomical, high-energy laser, and earth imaging applications. You will collaborate with design and project engineers, operate advanced optical manufacturing equipment, and ensure the highest standards of quality. Essential Functions:
- Independently run standard work on assigned CNC equipment and/or tooling tasks with limited supervision.
- Perform routine setups for standard part families: install standard fixtures, load tools, set work offsets, run warm-up and verification routines.
- Execute production operations on CNC or computer-controlled optics equipment (as assigned), following controlled work instructions and build documents.
- Conduct in-process checks using defined inspection points and standard measurement tools, and document results accurately.
- Perform routine tool changes and minor offset adjustments within defined limits to maintain dimensional control and surface integrity.
- Identify tool wear/failure modes (chipping, edge breakdown, runout symptoms) and respond to standard guidance.
- Support assembly and maintenance of tooling/fixtures per released designs, ensuring traceability and revision control.
- Follow and model safety practices for rotating equipment, guarding, and precision part handling.
- Participate in large optics moves as part of a move crew.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent, and a minimum of 4 years of prior relevant experience or experience in manufacturing and/or prototyping environment or 2 years post-Secondary/Associates Degree with 0 to 2 years of prior related manufacturing experience.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Hands-on CNC operation experience (mills/routers/grinders/turning centers) and comfort with offsets, tool length comp, and basic probing.
- CAM familiarity (viewing toolpaths, basic edits) and basic G-code reading.
- Experience building or maintaining fixtures for precision parts.
- Familiarity with brittle materials and defect prevention mindset (chips, edge damage, subsurface damage risk awareness)
In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in New York state is $55,000-$102,000. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
