L3Harris in Bristol is our headquarters for our Maritime UK businesses which provides warship automation systems through control and simulation solutions that are in service on Albion Class Landing Platform Docks and Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers. More systems are being developed and delivered for Type 26 and Type 31 frigates. We have additional Maritime UK sites across Burgess Hill, Barrow-In-Furness and Portchester. Together, we are powering the Royal Navy’s adoption of autonomous surface vehicle technology as well as delivering autonomous capability to UK ports, harbours and offshore energy service providers.

We have delivered more than 100 autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) systems.

We’re looking for a sharp, strategic Systems Engineering Manager to lead and scale out growing team – drive innovation, streamline complexity and shape the future of our capabilities. You’ll bring proven leadership, deep systems engineering expertise, and hands-on experience delivering complex, cross-functional projects.

What the role will involve

The responsibilities of your role will include the following:

Management:

  • Ensure Systems Engineering staff are enabled to execute their roles effectively and efficiently.
  • Carry out annual performance reviews for staff.
  • Carry out resource matrix management for Systems Engineers deployed across multiple projects, manage demand across projects, review workforce planning and carry out recruitment activities to meet business needs.
  • Support the development of Systems Engineering capability within the company (process and tools).
  • Monitor adherence to, and review training needs, with respect to corporate and local engineering processes.

Requirements Engineering:

  • Definition and management of system level requirements.
  • Management of Verification and Validation (V&V) evidence and understand the importance of traceability to customer requirements.
  • Experience of managing system level compliance documentation and management of concessions.
  • Reviewing and communicating the impact of changes to the technical baseline.
  • Development of V&V test plans.
  • To review the verification evidence received from key suppliers for compliance, either personally or through liaison with suitably qualified experienced personnel.
  • Support lower-level decomposition of requirements traceable to customer requirements.
  • Produce and/or support production of subsystem definitions and equipment specifications, in support of hardware engineering business functions.
  • Production of acceptance and selection criteria; and the technical evaluation of supplier responses.

Engineering Process:

  • Collaborate with other business functions to produce and review engineering work packages and associated work breakdown structures.
  • Support engineering initiatives to improve engineering quality and adherence to engineering process.

Architectural Design:

  • Support domain specialists in the definition and management of subsystem black box, white box and system interface diagrams.

Other:

  • Support design reviews and workshops to gain acceptance of the company designs from customer and project team stakeholders.
  • Capture voids in designs and present these to stakeholders.
  • Other ad hoc tasks as agreed with the line manager or work package lead.
  • Provide technical representation for the company to customers and suppliers and deputise for the technical manager(s) on occasions, where appropriate.

What you’ll bring

The role requires the following experience and skills:

  • Equivalent of Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience. Post Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience working on complex engineering projects;
  • Excellent understanding of systems concepts, context, boundaries, interfaces, system hierarchy and the principles of system partitioning in order to help manage complexity.
  • Excellent planning, communications, and co-ordination skills;
  • Excellent IT skills (Experience with DOORS is essential; System Architect or Rhapsody would be beneficial);
  • Knowledge of SysML (Systems Modelling Language).
  • Understands the characteristics of good quality requirements, elicitation methods and tools.
  • Good knowledge of Systems Design methodologies.
  • Able to understand detail and a low level of fidelity in technical decision making.
  • Good understanding of requirements engineering within Defence Projects – preferred
