Job Title: Sr Spec, Systems Engrg – Field Testing Lead

Job Code: 42407

Job Location: Yorba Linda, CA

Job Schedule: 4/10:  Employees work 10 hour days, 4 days a week with every Friday off

Job Description:

Navigation Solutions delivers advanced military GPS and broader Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) capabilities that support mission requirements across weapon systems, ground platforms, airborne assets, maritime systems, and space environments. The engineer will collaborate closely with cross functional teams to ensure these systems meet performance, reliability, and integration requirements across all operational domains.
A key responsibility of this role is field testing GPS receivers in contested and threat representative environments. This includes planning, executing, and analyzing tests that assess receiver performance under conditions such as jamming, spoofing, intentional interference, and degraded signal scenarios. The engineer will validate real world robustness, characterize system behavior under mission-relevant stressors, and ensure compliance with stringent military performance standards. These field activities require travel and coordination with external test ranges, customers, and mission partners.
Navigation Solutions products are engineered to provide resilient PNT performance for the warfighter operating in denied or degraded environments. This role directly ensures that GPS receivers and simulators maintain mission effectiveness when exposed to adversarial threats and operational challenges.

Essential Functions:

·Develop and integrate Special Test Equipment (STE) for Functional Qualification Testing (FQT), Environmental Testing, EMI testing, and manufacturing support.

·Perform hands-on system integration, test deployment, and execution roles.

·Proficient in the operation and understanding of wireless/RF test equipment, such as signal analyzers, signal generators, and spectrum analyzers.

·Develop test automation, including equipment drivers, debug tools, automation scripts, database interfaces, and reporting tools.

·Collaborate with engineering, quality assurance, and production teams to ensure a smooth testing process and address issues discovered during Acceptance Test Procedures (ATP) and Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT).

·Plan and set up complex production lab environments for end-to-end automation, including knowledge of lab networks and power supplies.

·Plan, coordinate, and execute field tests of GPS receivers in contested, degraded, and threat‑representative environments, including jamming, spoofing, and interference scenarios.

·Develop detailed field test plans, procedures, and instrumentation setups to evaluate receiver performance, resiliency, and compliance with military requirements.

·Operate and configure portable RF, GPS, and PNT test equipment during field missions, ensuring accurate signal capture, logging, and analysis.

·Collect, analyze, and interpret large datasets from field events to assess receiver performance, identify anomalies, and characterize system behavior under operationally relevant stressors.

·Interface with external test ranges, government partners, program stakeholders, and mission partners to schedule and conduct field activities.

·Ensure proper handling, configuration, and verification of test assets, including GPS receivers, antennas, and range‑provided instrumentation.

·Document field results through reports, presentations, and internal briefings to support design updates, readiness reviews, and customer deliverables.

·Provide technical feedback to system engineering, firmware, software, and hardware teams to drive corrective actions for issues discovered during field testing.

·Support creation and refinement of threat models, test profiles, and operational scenarios to ensure alignment with modern adversarial techniques.

·Assist in maintaining readiness of field‑test kits, including calibration of instruments, verification of data‑logging systems, and management of test‑specific hardware.

·Must have a US Secret security clearance

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) or related discipline with minimum 6 years or a graduate degree with a minimum of 4 years prior relevant experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.
  • Travel up to 50%.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Strong scripting experience with Python and debugging skills.
  • Knowledge of system test automation execution and experience in isolating issues in both software and hardware.
  • Regularly contributes to overall test integration and automation process improvement.
  • Must work effectively in both independent and team environments.
  • Must have excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of RF fundamentals, signal characteristics, interference effects, jamming/spoofing mechanisms, and real-world RF propagation challenges.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead field test activities, including planning, logistics coordination, range interface, safety preparation, and execution oversight.
  • Ability to diagnose and isolate complex issues across RF hardware, embedded software, digital interfaces, and environmental factors encountered during field events.
  • Regular contributor to improving field test processes, validation methodologies, instrumentation kits, and reporting workflows.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills, including the ability to present findings to internal leadership and external customers.
  • Must work effectively in both independent and team-oriented environments, often under dynamic or time-sensitive conditions.
  • Flexible work schedule but 4/10 is preferred

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in California is $102,000 - $189,000. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location. L3Harris also offers a variety of benefits, including health and disability insurance, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, EAP, education assistance, parental leave, paid time off, and company-paid holidays.
