Job Description:
The L3Harris Imaging Division in Wilmington, MA designs and manufactures unique, cutting edge solutions (cool stuff) for space and airborne markets. This site is an industry leader in the design and production of space based mechanisms, telescopes, and payloads for small satellites in both the commercial and non-commercial markets to solve some of the toughest space based challenges out there. To give you an idea of one of these space based products: the Wilmington site delivered a telescope that supported NASA’s New Horizon mission. This telescope took the first close up pictures of Pluto ever (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/newhorizons/images/index.html). That spacecraft with that telescope is currently beyond our solar system, one of only 5 man made objects to be in deep space. While we do a lot for Space, we also have a few Airborne programs like this one for the F-35!
The Wilmington Operations team is looking to add a manufacturing engineer who is creative and loves to solve tough problems through the production phase of our F-35 Fast Steering Mirror program. This role will play a strong part and touch on leadership at times throughout the lifecycle of our F-35 program. This person will be the technical manufacturing lead for this program, working on various projects to reduce cycle time and cost, and improve upon quality. As this is a production program that has shipped over 1,500 units, it’s all about optimizing our production process to help deliver the best value for our customer.
Essential Functions:
- Lead and execute manufacturing engineering activities for the assembly and integration of the F-35 Fast Steering Mirror, an opto-mechanical and electrical assembly.
- Propose, develop and lead process improvement and cost reduction projects, apply lean liberally to the production cell.
- Lead elements of the manufacturing process including of optimization of manufacturing processes, procedures and production layouts.
- Lead design changes by coordinating with design engineering to address technical, operationa, and obsolescence issues.
- Estimate and track manufacturing costs, use that data to initiate Continuous Improvement activities.
- Interface with and direct technicians and other operations personnel, back up the operations manager when out on vacation.
- Support capacity planning and lab space layout support for program changes.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience of graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior electro-mechanical engineering experience.
- Electrical or electro-mechanical engineering experience.
- Ability to obtain a clearance.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Experience with optical engineering a plus.
- Evidence of strong problem-solving capability, people skills, and the ability to conduct presentations for various internal/external customers.
- Lean (Green Belt, Black Belt) certification.
- CAD training (Solid Works/AutoCAD).
- Knowledge of program and project management techniques and tools.
- Familiarity with AS9100/ISO9001 industry standards.
- Fabrication of reflectors, lenses, electrical assemblies, opto/mechanical alignment.
