As a subsidiary of L3Harris Technologies and within the Integrated Mission Systems Segment, the WESCAM division develops the most advanced optical sensor and targeting systems for global defense and military sectors, National Security, Search & Rescue and Airborne law enforcement agencies. About the Role
Our products are only valuable to our customers if they are safe and reliable. That is where you come in. You will be working as part of a Supportability Team, focusing on a variety of Safety Engineering tasks and initiatives. This role requires someone with a can-do attitude, strong technical background, an eagerness to learn new things, and a passion for System Safety.
Primary Responsibilities
- Work in the Specialty Engineering group with a specific emphasis on System Safety
- Promote System Safety awareness and its importance throughout the business
- Decompose customer requirements pertaining to System Safety
- Support Bids and Proposal activities, generating bid responses and estimating work packages for System Safety analysis activities
- Define the System Safety requirements and risks for each project in conjunction with the Lead Systems Engineer
- Partner with design team throughout design process to ensure that System Safety requirements are achieved
- Review vendor documentation and challenge supplier analysis
- Produce preliminary sub-assembly safety assessment in support of product development
- Participate and promote safety in design reviews
- Perform the following analysis activities to support safety of design and its verification:
- System Safety Hazard Analysis
- Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA)
- Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
- If familiar with RAM analysis, perform the following activities to assist Reliability Engineering when required:
- Reliability Prediction (MTBF)
- Testability Analysis
- Maintainability Prediction
- Support safety assurance analysis for software and firmware designs
- Support the Product Safety Management Process by participating in Product Safety Committees
- Production of Safety & Environmental Program Plans, Safety Case Reports and System Safety Hazard Analysis on complex integrated systems solutions spanning airborne, ground and maritime platforms
- Support the design change process by estimating and validating the safety impacts of each of the proposed changes
- Mentor junior employees
Required Capabilities
- Motivated self-starter who seeks opportunities to collaborate with others
- A curiosity in how things work and break, so that they may be improved
- Analytical thinker with the ability to extract meaningful data from various sources
- Working knowledge of standards related to System Safety (e.g. MIL-STD-882, DEF STAN 00-56, DO-178, DO-254, ARP4754, ARP4761, etc.) would be an asset
- Familiarity with electrical/electronic circuit analysis
- Familiarity with electro-mechanical motion control equipment
- Familiarity with electro-optic imaging equipment
- Familiarity with ANSI and FDA standards related to laser classification and safety
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with meticulous attention to detail
- Meets the requirements of the Controlled Goods Registration Program and is eligible for a Canadian government security clearance
Desired Education and Experiences
- Bachelor’s degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience, or a graduate degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience.
- Experience in the aerospace and/or defense industry is preferred.
- Experience with Integrated Systems on Airborne, Ground and Marine platforms.
