About the Role

The Manufacturing Technician – Assembly & Optical Assembly position is responsible for highly complex opto-mechanical assembly including aligning and bonding optical components. Operation of various precision optical equipment to assemble lenses with sound technical problem-solving skills.  They perform final inspection of complicated optical elements and assemblies. 

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Analyze and interpret complex mechanical and optical schematics, ensuring precise execution of assembly, integration and testing procedures
  • Execute- Assemble, test, operation, and troubleshooting of complex optical mechanical assemblies following all established manufacturing processes and procedures in alignment with AS9100 standards
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot optical and mechanical components, including but not limited to lens and lens assemblies, motors, sensors and wire harness assemblies, to ensure optimal system performance and reliability
  • Investigate and resolve faults by collaborating with senior technicians and engineers, contributing to continuous product development and process improvement
  • Effectively manage multiple priorities, balancing assembly, testing, and troubleshooting tasks to meet critical project timelines and production goals
  • Engage in cross-functional collaboration, work closely with Operation Engineers, production teams, and management to tackle complex technical challenges and drive innovative solutions
  • Ensuring meticulous documentation, maintaining detailed records of maintenance, test results, troubleshooting efforts and implemented solutions.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, identifying inefficiencies in processes, recommending enhancements, and implementing best practices to optimize performance and workflow efficiency.

Required Capabilities

  • Technical Proficiency – Strong ability to read and interpret optical & mechanical drawings and test procedures
  • System Integration Expertise – Experience in assembling, configuring, and testing complex opto-mechanical or electro-mechanical systems
  • Troubleshooting & Diagnostics – Skilled in identifying, analyzing and resolving optical and mechanical issues
  • Strong Collaboration & Communication – Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with engineers, production teams and management. Good English communication skills in both written and verbal that translate into working in a team-based environment.
  • Continuous Improvement & Safety Mindset – Abilities to think critically, identify inefficiencies in processes, suggest improvements and be open minded to change.
  • High Standards in quality with attention to detail, Capable of learning and taking on new tasks with an increasing level of responsibility

Desired Education and Experiences

  • Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 4 years of prior relevant experience or 2 years post-Secondary/Associates Degree (Diploma in Photonics or Electronic/Mechanical Engineering Technology with 0 to 2 years of prior related experience.
  • Previous work experience in an ISO 9000/ AS9100 and Lean Manufacturing environment is an asset
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement principles an asset, but not required
  • Ability to safely handle delicate optical parts and on occasion lift 30 lbs.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision
  • Must be eligible for registering with Controlled Goods Program of Canada

*This posting is for a current vacancy.  In the province of Ontario, Canada, the pay range for this position will be $24 to $27/hr.
