Job Description:
The Shipping and Receiving Manager will directly oversee the shipping department and indirectly manage receiving operations to meet company objectives, maintain compliance with government regulations, and support production timelines. Responsible for, controlling and managing activities related to inventory control within receiving, shipping, expediting, dock oversite and training. Establishes and modifies operational methods and procedures/training material. Troubleshoot and rectify discrepancies and assist Supply Chain with system flow to ensure consistencies in understanding and look for process improvements to that end.
Essential Functions:
- Oversee all aspects of the shipping department, including outbound logistics, documentation, and carrier coordination.
- Supervises employees under his/her direct responsibility and creates and gives periodic performance reviews, issues warnings in instances of substandard performance or disciplines employees as required.
- Monitor receiving operations to ensure timely and accurate delivery of materials to support manufacturing schedules.
- Maintain compliance with DoD regulations, export control laws, and company policies.
- Develop and implement strategies to improve shipping and receiving processes, reduce lead times, and minimize errors.
- Coordinate with production, inventory, and scheduling teams to ensure seamless material flow and on-time delivery.
- Prepare and analyze shipping and receiving reports to identify trends, resolve issues, and improve performance metrics.
- Collaborate with government compliance teams to support audits and ensure adherence to all applicable regulations.
- Manage and track inventory accuracy within shipping and receiving processes.
- Ensure proper handling and documentation of hazardous materials, if applicable. Works closely with the Purchasing and Operation Program Managers (OPM) for all material related issues ensuring that schedules are maintained and products are completed and shipped in a timely manner.
- Identifies the need for added personnel and creates personnel requisitions for presentation to management for review and concurrence. Interviewing and selection of qualified employees to fill these authorized positions will then be required.
- Directly manage and provide leadership to the shipping team, including training, performance evaluations, and scheduling. Indirectly oversee the receiving team, ensuring alignment with company objectives and adherence to established processes. Foster a positive and productive work environment that promotes teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement. Address personnel issues, resolve conflicts, and enforce company policies and procedures as needed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Must be proficient in the use of personal computers with the ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel and have a complete understanding of mainframe based MRP or manufacturing systems for tracking of work for the stocking, issuing and tracking of material.
- 5+ years of experience in shipping, receiving, or logistics, preferably in a manufacturing or DoD contracting environment.
- Strong knowledge of government compliance requirements, including ITAR and export controls.
- Proficiency in inventory management systems and ERP software (e.g., SAP, Oracle).
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Lean or Six Sigma certification is a plus.
- Familiarity with hazardous materials handling regulations (e.g., DOT, IATA) is an advantage.
