Job Description

L3Harris is seeking a Lead, Electrical Engineer – Power Hardware to join our team in Palm Bay, FL. In this role, you will support the design and development of advanced space-qualified power hardware for mission-critical applications. This is an opportunity to contribute to innovative spacecraft and payload power solutions in a fast-paced engineering environment where concepts move into production reality.

The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in spacecraft electrical power subsystem design, including power architecture development, circuit simulation, detailed analysis, hardware verification, and cross-functional collaboration. This position will play a key role in supporting current and future programs, internal research and development efforts, and strategic growth initiatives.

Essential Functions:

• Lead the design and development of advanced power hardware using sound electrical engineering principles and best practices.
• Support all phases of hardware development, including requirements analysis, architecture definition, detailed design, schematic capture, simulation, documentation, manufacturing, integration, and verification.
• Translate customer and system-level requirements into detailed electrical specifications and power architectures while balancing technical, cost, and schedule constraints.
• Design and analyze isolated and non-isolated power conversion topologies, including:
• AC/DC converters
• DC/DC converters
• Battery chargers
• Power management and distribution circuits
• Perform detailed analysis of power circuits for:
• Voltage regulation and voltage ripple analysis
• Custom magnetics design
• Mitigation of Single Event Transients due to particle strikes
• Total dose radiation (given parametric degradations)
• Neutron fluence (given parametric degradations)
• Efficiency
• Thermal performance
• Control-loop stability
• EMI/EMC
• Transient response
• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to power engineers.
• Troubleshoot and resolve hardware issues at the component, board, module, payload, and system levels.
• Use laboratory instruments such as oscilloscopes, source meters, electronic loads, signal generators, multimeters, and DC power supplies to validate designs and investigate issues.
• Conduct trade studies and develop conceptual power solutions in support of proposals, IRAD, and new business opportunities.
• Collaborate with program leadership, manufacturing, systems engineering, and other cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, high-quality hardware solutions.
• Evaluate component tolerances and environmental impacts to ensure robust design margins for high-reliability applications in harsh operating environments.
• Support risk reduction and mitigation activities related to obsolescence, cost, producibility, and long-lead materials.
• Experience with Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) and Failure Review Boards (FRB)

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 9 years of prior relevant experience in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or another relevant STEM field or Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience
• Experience interpreting high-level requirements and developing power architectures
• Strong experience in electronic power design, including:
• Power devices
• Control loop theory
• Thermal management
• Custom magnetics design
• Printed wiring board layout
• EMI filtering
• Technical knowledge of spacecraft power subsystems, including:
• Ability to model spacecraft mission orbital average power, energy balance, and solar arrays
• Batteries
• Power topologies and charging systems
• Power control and switching
• Regulation
• Distribution
• Power quality

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ability to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance
• Proposal generation with technical architecture/cost/schedule
• Experience performing detailed analysis of power circuit custom magnetics
• Experience with mission definition, concept generation, trade studies, preliminary and final design, component selection, integration, test support, materials selection, and design documentation
• Experience developing qualified deliverable power hardware for space, aerospace, defense, medical, or other mission-critical applications

• Experience working with manufacturing and production teams in a program environment
• Experience with Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) and Failure Review Boards (FRB)
• Experience generating and presenting technical material to program leadership, customers, and review boards
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• Ability to collaborate effectively across technical teams and leadership levels
• Experience serving as a subcontract technical representative, including supplier evaluation, statement of work development, and technical oversight of external deliverables
• Experience with ECAD and analysis tools such including:
  • LTSpice
  • PSpice
  • Cadence
  • Siemens Xpedition
• Experience integrating firmware/software with hardware in lab and system environments
• Mathcad, MATLAB, Python, or similar programming experience for modeling, analysis, and automation
• Experience modeling spacecraft mission orbital average power and energy balance
