Job Description:
The Specialist, Manufacturing Engineering is part of a multi-disciplinary team planning, developing and implementing manufacturing processes for advanced laser range finders and laser designators. This position contributes to the processes involving the laser based electro-optical systems, tooling, test equipment and the manufacturing environment.
Essential Functions:
- Work with design engineers, test engineers, technicians, managers and other members of the organization.
- Liaise with Suppliers and Technicians.
- Identify faults, investigate production problems and institute corrective action quickly and eficiently. If a major failure occurs, institute and support the RCCA process.
- Participate in Continuous Improvement activities and assist the Continuous Improvement Lead as directed.
- Institute collect and analyze statistical metrics that monitor and determine production efficiencies.
- Develop training programs and provide training on process and assemblies.
- Develop manufacturing processes for new products, including Military Eye-Safe Laser Range Finders and Laser Designators.
- Adapt existing tools, optics and equipment to meet changing production needs and new products.
- Specify new equipment such as optical test equipment, assembly equipment, inspection equipment.
- Lay out and improve work areas and equipment.
- Troubleshoot product and test equipment.
- Provide input to product engineers to improve the manufacturability of new and existing products.
- Create work instructions.
- Monitor and report process performance metrics.
- Improve the quality, reduce cost, improve schedule, and reduce the risk of existing processes.
- Analyze the Bills of Materials (BOM) for complex assemblies, make “Make/Buy” decisions, determine process flow, write assembly work instructions and inspection instructions.
- Read and understand complex electrical schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams and engineering drawings.
- Make determinations of the proper assembly/manufacturing processes for complex electrical assemblies
- Troubleshoot complex electrical assemblies and write Test/Troubleshoot procedures for these assemblies
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience.
- Graduate Degree or equivalent and minimum 2 years of prior related experience.
- In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
- 4+ years’ experience in process design, development and testing of optical and electro-optical components and systems
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid U.S. Passport.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
- Able to travel nationally / internationally on an as needed basis.
- Able to work weekends and evenings as required to meet company objectives
- Must be a United States Citizen
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Hands-on mechanical, electrical, optical and laser assembly aptitude and experience.
- Creative problem solving.
- Detailed knowledge of Laser and Optics, testing and integration,
- Knowledge of laboratory and system level laser diagnostics.
- Knowledge of electrical/electronics manufacturing techniques.
- Experience with the integration and test of preproduction prototypes and documentation of laser level assembly, alignment and test techniques.
- Self-starter, able to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proven success in a fast-paced development and manufacturing environment and possess a willingness to take ownership, accept accountability, and thrive under pressure.
- Possess exceptional communication (both oral and written) and listening skills, with a strong orientation to details, and the ability to make quick, informed decisions.
- Ability to make presentations to large audiences including customers, government personnel and senior management team members.
- Strong relationship building skills at all levels of an organization and the ability to work effectively across functions within a matrix environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint).
