Job Description:

L3Harris is seeking an Aero Tool Designer (Mechanical Engineering Specialist) for our Aeronautical Systems Engineering team.  The position involves designing production tooling such as jigs, fixtures, gages, and molds to support part fabrication, assembly, and installation for modifying and installing aircraft structures, mission equipment, and mechanical systems on special mission aircraft.  The specialist will apply design and structural analysis principles, conduct research, and prepare technical data packages using CAD/CAM (Siemens NX2011) software in a PDM (Teamcenter 13.3) environment.  Experience with Technical Data Package (TPD) Development, Model Based Definition (MBD), and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 is preferred.  This role will also utilize engineering metrology equipment, including laser trackers, scanners, and portable CMMs, and implement Additive Manufacturing techniques.  Coordination of design activities to meet budget and schedule, compliance with all processes, and the ability to influence and gain support across diverse teams without direct authority are crucial. The ideal candidate will creatively address design constraints, proactively solve engineering challenges, and provide tailored customer solutions, transitioning conceptual designs into manufacturing product solutions while collaborating with senior engineers and training junior engineers as necessary. Outputs for this role include producing tool design drawings, sketches, technical data packages, tool use instructions, installation workflows, ground support equipment designs, alignment procedures, laser scanning processes, recommendations for tool fabrication execution, and 3D printed products across various aircraft systems and platforms.

Essential Functions:

  • Able to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Aeronautical, Civil Engineering, or related field with a minimum of four (4) years of aircraft tool design experience, or a Master’s Degree in the same fields with a minimum of two (2) years of aircraft tool design experience preferred. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency in CAD and familiarity with ASME Y14.5 GD&T.
  • Basic understanding of aircraft systems and various mission systems.
  • Experience managing projects or processes with general supervision and the ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding environment focused on problem resolution and process improvement.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and other relevant computer applications.
  • Ability to professionally communicate with internal and external contacts, including customers and suppliers.
  • Experience explaining and interpreting operational processes, practices, procedures, engineering drawings, and other technical documents.
  • Capable of providing guidance, coaching, and training to other employees.
  • Ability to travel to and from the flight line, work in aircraft hangar and manufacturing environments, and board/exit aircraft.
  • Able to relocate as necessary and travel.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Five (5) years of aircraft tool design-related experience.
  • Outstanding communication, negotiation, collaboration, time management, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Results-oriented leader with experience in a matrixed environment, including manpower planning, milestone scheduling, and financial management.
  • Experience with the total lifecycle of program execution (proposals, bids, planning, risk management, material selection, fabrication process, inspection, and sustainment).
  • Familiarity with FAA (Part 23 or 25) or military aircraft airworthiness design, certification processes, and requirements; knowledge of project management and earned value management system principles.
  • High proficiency in tolerance stack analysis compliant with ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Experience with hardware and software used in 3D scanning/metrology systems, reverse engineering, and 3D Additive Technology (SLA, FDM).
  • Experience with Siemens TeamCenter PDM and NX CAD and Model Based Definition (MBD) design using Product Manufacturing Information (PMI).
  • Demonstrated experience with structural analysis of production tooling or peculiar ground support.
