About the role

L3Harris in Eight Mile Plains is The Centre of Excellence for Electronic Warfare and is home to world-leading design, manufacture and integration expertise and the sustainment of high-reliability electronic warfare components. Our highly skilled workforce design and develop Australia’s sovereign defence capabilities such as the next-generation space, airborne and cyber capabilities for the Australian warfighter.

What the role will involve

The key responsibilities of your role will include the following:

  • Provide technical oversight for all software designs produced by the SW Team.
  • Foster professionalism within the SW Team with an on-time, on-budget delivery focus.
  • Routinely review the design tools and processes with a view towards identifying and implementing continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Manage the SW Team capacity and individual loading in consultation with Project Managers/Engineers to optimise delivery and maximize throughput.
  • Coordinate goal setting and performance reviews within the SW Team.
  • Identify training and career development needs and generate proposals to support funding for these.
  • Identify tools (incl. software) and equipment to improve capability and efficiency and generate CAPEX proposals, incl. justifications.
  • Contribute as required to the development of new bids and contract proposals.
  • Assist in recruiting, onboarding and on-the-job training of SW Team members.
  • Provide regular status reporting.
  • Attend engineering leadership team meetings and present the status and short-term plan of the SW Team.
  • Contribute to project and departmental Risk Management activities.
  • Participate in Change Control Board meetings.
  • Ensure adherence of the SW Team to all company quality processes and procedures in support of AS9100 accreditation.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Oversee the design and development operations of the SW Team, including firmware, embedded software, application-level software and test software.
  • Provide requirements and support for DevOps maintenance.
  • Report directly to the Engineering Manager on the overall SW Engineering capability including processes, tools and training.
  • Review and approve software designs.
  • Review project schedules to ensure financial and time constraints are suitable from a SW Team perspective.
  • Oversee verification and release of software deliveries and ensure functional requirements are met.
  • Interact with customers and participate in customer reviews.
  • Write, review and/or approve software related documentation, including project deliverables.
  • Collaborate with the other engineering discipline Group Leads.
  • Mentor junior engineers.
  • Provide software engineering support to manufacturing when required.
  • Selection and management of software subcontractors where required.
  • When required, provide support to the SW Team’s efforts in development, testing and debugging.
  • Support development of R&D proposals aligned with strategic direction.

What you’ll bring 

The role requires the following experience and skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Software Engineering or equivalent.
  • 6+ years of experience in Software Engineering and development.
  • 3+ years of experience in a leadership position.
  • Experience in developing software for embedded applications and microcontroller based circuits.
  • Experience in developing software in C/C++.
  • Experience in application and web development.
  • Experience using GIT.
  • Experience with Atlassian tools (Jira/Confluence).
  • Experience in writing automated tests for software.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining DevOps.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Accuracy, thoroughness, persistence and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to lead a small design team.
  • Effective delegation skills.

Desirable:

  • Experience with Xilinx hardware targets and tooling.
  • Experience with Python.
  • Experience with web frameworks such as React.
