Job Description: We are seeking a dedicated Optical Engineer Integrated Product Team (IPT) lead to join our team, providing critical on-site support for our space programs. Our projects span imaging systems across the UV to LWIR regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The successful candidate will be deeply involved in the practical aspects of optical engineering, ensuring the integrity and performance of our sophisticated optical systems.

Essential Functions:

  • This position will lead an Integrated Product Team (IPT) at the Wilmington, MA facility that generates development plans, schedules and cost estimates for complex programs, tracks the progress and keeps the programs on schedule through delivery and customer acceptance.
  • Responsibilities include managing a cross functional technical design and development team with full technical, cost, & budget responsibility. Additional responsibilities include management of requirements definition, conceptual trades, design & analysis to procurement and integration & test of sensor systems.
  • Products include development of complex imaging telescopes, electronics and mechanism subsystems including precision scanning mirror systems, gimbal pointing systems, EO mechanisms, EO calibration systems, Imaging cameras, Cables and test equipment for the aerospace and commercial community.
  • Help establish and maintain a Baseline. Have a thorough knowledge of the program’s Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and how it links to the Scope, Cost and Schedule. 
  • Know the importance of Change Management and ensure procedures are followed
  • Establish and achieve the Cost Performance objectives.
  • Own, develop, and manage the team schedule, technical project implementation, and project vision
  • Be responsible for planning and managing resources.
  • Additional responsibilities include supporting new business proposals, Basis Of Estimate (BOE) task and cost development, Tiger Team involvement, customer/sub-contractor/supplier interface, and the development junior and mid-level staff.   
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to achieve project objectives, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team setting.
  • Utilize strong organizational skills to manage tasks and documentation effectively.
  • Apply excellent written and verbal communication skills to document processes, convey technical information, and facilitate effective teamwork.
  • Participate in systems trade studies, vender assessments with an emphasis on practical evaluation and lab-based experimentation.
  • Mentor and guide new engineers in the art of optical alignments and techniques, ensuring knowledge transfer and adherence to best practices for lab-based system builds and experimental setups.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 12 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 16 years of prior related experience.
  • Experience leading small technical cross functional teams.
  • Experience in optical systemes and optical sub-assembly hardware development, analysis, integration, reliability, and risk mitigation for space-based environments.
  • Experience in aerospace optical procurement and radiation-hardened environments.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Active DoD security clearance 
  • Degree in Optics or Physics or Optical Engineering Technology
  • Experience managing and reporting development plans, schedule, budget, risk
  • Experience generating cost & schedule plans and estimates
  • 9 years Relevant Engineering & Project Leadership Work Experience with a proven track-record in aerospace & military defense applications
  • Proficiency with Zemax and/or Code V optical software for design and analysis purposes.
  • Experience as a lead engineer, or project engineer
  • Experience supporting new business pursuits and writing technical proposals
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills for interfacing with senior management and customers as well as mentoring of associate engineers.
