Job Description:
We are seeking a dynamic front line Sr. Manager of Survivability Engineering that is a technical leader and organization contributor to join our Specialty Engineering team in Mason, Ohio. This position will lead approximately 8 direct reports in the Survivability Engineering group, assign tasks, responsible for approvals, evaluate team performance, set forth projects/processes to grow capabilities, support bid and proposals, mentor new hires, and facilitate communications to/from the team. The Survivability Engineering manager will not only provide coaching and leadership development for the direct staff but will also be responsible for contracts and program projects to ensure customer requirements are achieved.

The Front Line Engineering Manager has responsibilities that align with six (6) key functions.
1. Core Technical Expertise and Compliance
- Lead PM&P Engineering Compliance Efforts: Lead parts, materials, and process (PM&P) engineering to ensure full compliance with customer-specific PM&P requirements, with a focus on reliability, quality, and regulatory alignment.
- Compliance Verification: Skilled in using established PM&P engineering methods to verify and document compliance, ensuring adherence to standards like MIL-STD, IPC, and JEDEC.
- EEE Component and Material Characterization: Proficiency in conducting material characterization and analyzing electronics hardware failure mechanisms through root cause investigations, understanding both technical and programmatic impacts.
- Radiation Engineering for Space Applications: Conduct analysis, selection, and testing of electronic components and materials to ensure they meet stringent radiation tolerance requirements for space environments. Assess Total Ionizing Dose (TID), Single Event Effects (SEE), and displacement damage dose (DDD) to mitigate radiation-induced failures. Develop shielding strategies, select radiation-hardened parts, and implement derating techniques to enhance component resilience and mission reliability in high-radiation environments.
- Reliability Engineering and Analysis: Perform Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and part count analysis to assess potential failure points and evaluate the reliability of components and systems. Develop and implement strategies to mitigate risks associated with component failures, improving overall system reliability and lifecycle performance. Apply reliability prediction methods and tools to validate design robustness and ensure compliance with mission requirements, especially for critical applications in high-reliability fields.
2. Documentation, Standards, and BOM Review
- Qualified and Preferred Parts Lists: Ability to maintain, develop, and review qualified and preferred parts, materials, and processes lists, ensuring they meet rigorous standards for high-reliability applications.
- Bill of Materials (BOM) Review: Experience in reviewing BOMs for new designs or design changes to identify obsolete, restricted, or noncompliant components, advising design teams on alternative sourcing and risk mitigation.
- Drawing Standards and Specification Enforcement: Skilled in developing, reviewing, and enforcing drawing standards and guidelines specific to PM&P specifications, ensuring clarity and compliance in technical documentation.
- ADPML and ABPML Preparation: Proficient in preparing and reviewing Approved/Authorized Parts, Materials, and Processes Lists (ADPML and ABPML) in line with program requirements to ensure consistency and traceability.
3. Advanced Analysis and Quality Assurance
- Failure Analysis and Root Cause Investigation: Advanced skills in root cause analysis for PM&P-related issues, using methods such as SEM, EDS, and X-ray analysis, and leading investigations to identify and resolve hardware failure mechanisms.
- Material Characterization: Expertise in analyzing material characteristics (e.g., thermal, mechanical, and chemical properties) relevant to electronic component reliability, especially for high-reliability sectors like aerospace and defense.
- End Item Data Package Review: Experienced in reviewing and approving project End Item Data Packages, including prohibited/restricted PM&P scans to ensure compliance with customer and regulatory standards.
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration and Customer Coordination
- PM&P Lead Coordination: Ability to coordinate with customer PM&P Leads to develop PM&P plans and documentation that align with program requirements and customer expectations.
- Internal and Customer Design Reviews: Skilled in preparing for and participating in internal and customer-facing product design reviews, project kick-offs, and technical discussions, ensuring PM&P considerations are clearly addressed.
- Design Support: Strong collaborator, supporting design engineering, new product development, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain in resolving PM&P-related issues and ensuring alignment with engineering requirements.
5. Project Management and Control
- Configuration Control: Experienced in participating in configuration control board (CCB) meetings, ensuring component and materials specifications are up-to-date, compliant, and traceable.
- Product Development and Qualification: Proven track record of assisting in development and qualification activities, supporting projects through prototype, testing, and final product stages to ensure reliability and performance.
- Support for Proposal Teams: Work closely with proposal teams, advising on PM&P considerations, compliance requirements, and material selection to support successful bids and align with customer needs.
6. Administration and management of employees.
- Carry out performance management and goal setting of all direct reports, both formal and informal. Provide meaningful, constructive feedback to ensure the development of each staff member.
- Lead performance improvement plan formulation and execution as needed.
- Proactively support reward and recognition activities for the staff members. Develop and submit merit recommendations during the yearly merit review cycle.
- Perform conflict resolution between teammates as required.
- Take an active role in the professional development of each staff member. May include identification, guidance, and support of formal training, on-the-job training, mentoring, and/or new program assignments.
- Act as a mentor to less experienced engineers, providing training and guidance on PM&P requirements, industry standards, and technical best practices, fostering a culture of continuous learning.
- Foster an individual and team culture of Continuous Improvement (CI)
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with a minimum of 12 years of prior related experience. Graduate Degree with a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 16 years of prior related experience.
- Experience working within and outside of the organization to include working with customers, vendors, and company or program leadership.
- Experience with total lifecycle of programs including proposals, bids, planning, assessing/managing risk, and execution.
- Experience calculating reliability predictions (e.g., MTBF) for electronic and electro-optical systems, and prepare System Reliability Analysis Reports for submission to customers.
- Experience creating radiation test plans and radiation effects on electronic systems and components.
- Experience with managing engineering teams.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a US DoD security clearance, which requires US citizenship.
- Able to travel up to 20% for radiation testing or vendor audits.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Knowledge of manpower planning, milestone scheduling, and related financial management.
- Capacity to teach and mentor others.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work well within and outside of the organization including with customers, vendors, and company or program leadership without oversight.

- Knowledge in development and implementation of Product Safety Plans.
- Capable of managing and working in an environment that is fast paced, demanding, with a focus on problem resolution and process improvement.
- Prior experience in space and defense.
- Proficient in people management, evaluations, and team building.
- Six Sigma Certification.
- Demonstrated experience in preparing customer and/or management level briefings.
- In-depth experience in development of technical and cost proposals.
- Failure Analysis (FA) and experience troubleshooting.
- Certification in System Safety.
- Ability to drive change in a technical work environment.
