Job Description:

This position is responsible for leading the mechanical engineering design, analysis, evaluation, and qualification efforts of complex undersea electro-optical-mechanical systems. Leads Mechanical Engineering associates on programs, developing alternative designs to satisfy mission level requirements, documenting design approaches, establishing design verification & validation, and developing plans to manufacture and test sensor systems. The position is responsible for discipline specific engineering teams in a functional organization including department strategic growth, personnel development, hiring, performance reviews, disciplinary actions, goal development, and staffing to program teams. Additional expectations include support to new business opportunities, participation in industry-wide events, and active development of staff. The position will report to the Functional Mechanical Engineering Manager of the Undersea Systems Division.

Essential Functions:

  • Determine, assign and implement projects and project tasks to proper personnel to provide a total engineering solution including system design, mechanical design, materials selection, packaging, and test equipment design for all current and anticipated programs. Perform producibility and manufacturability analyses and ensure that the design meets the specifications and standards.
  • Ensure project tasks meet allocated contract cost and schedule requirements. Identify problems and recommend work around plans and alternatives.
  • Provide technical status, forecast personnel needs, and implement changes as necessary to meet program objectives.
  • Implement procedures to monitor, review and evaluate design activities performed on programs to assure conformance with customer requirements, company standards, and sound engineering practices.
  • Develop requirements and provide technical support for selection and maintenance of technical tools (CAD, FEA, CFD, etc.), and laboratory and test equipment.
  • Prepare design review material in support of SRR, PDR, CDR, MRR and technical audits for assigned programs.
  • Provide system test and evaluation support including input to test plans and procedures.
  • Perform system studies and trade-off analyses in support of assigned projects and new business opportunities.
  • Support development of detailed BOE’s (basis of estimates) for proposals and EAC’s (estimates at completion) for existing programs.
  • Develop and mentor technical personnel. Maintain morale, motivation and creativity through broad based, challenging assignments, and promote a professional and ethical work environment. Provide timely and constructive performance evaluations and career development assistance and training. Ensure high competency skills that match program needs.
  • Develop issue and implement internal technical and engineering practices and procedures. Decisions may involve establishment of precedents.
  • Promote cordial relationships, foster and maintain a favorable business profile with customers, suppliers, co-workers, industry, professional associations, government agencies, and the local community.
  • Participate in e3 (continuous improvement) activities including DFMA, SCRUM, 3P, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Must have an active DOD US Security Clearance upon hire.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and minimum 9 years prior related experience in design and development in a defense related environment; or Graduate Degree with a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience.
  • Five (5) years of experience as a functional technical lead.
  • Experience leading a mechanical engineering team through successful design, qualification, fabrication, assembly, integration, test, and deployment phases of marine and/or sensor systems.
  • Experience/expert knowledge of solid modeling (Solidworks preferred) and generation of FEA models (ANSYS preferred).
  • Experience/expert knowledge of detail and assembly drawing creation utilizing ASME Y14.5.
  • Mechanical Engineering analysis background using both classical techniques and Computer Aided Engineering that include thermal, structural (modal, stress, deflection), and fluid mechanics.
  • Experience in the generation of engineering documentation using standard Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, and Power Point).
  • Experience as a lead engineer, project engineer, or IPT Lead.
  • Experience supporting Business Development and proposal efforts.
  • Experience mentoring and developing Mechanical Engineers.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Experience in the specification, design, integration, test, and installation of undersea sensor systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work well with senior management, peers, and subordinates alike.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in the specification, design, analysis, qualification, integration, test and deployment of high-reliability, long-life, electro-mechanical undersea sensor systems.
  • Five (5) years’ experience using Solidworks Mechanical CAD.
  • Five (5) years’ experience using ANSYS Mechanical FEA software.
  • Five (5) years’ experience using PTC MathCad Engineering Math software.
