Job Description:

The Payload Chief Systems Engineer is responsible for the technical leadership of a space based, remote sensing payload system and delivers full life-cycle systems integration and engineering services to meet the missions of its customers. This role works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team to develop a satellite payload system, provide guidance on optical electrical and mechanical assemblies, and drives consistency with technology roadmaps and architectures in area of focus. Responsible for the architectural design, development oversight, and deployment of Electro-Optical Payload. Responsible for definition of system solutions based on internal customer needs. Ability to develop system architectures across multiple platforms, mission domains and applications. Accountable for all aspects of the systems engineering V.

Works to achieve annual business revenue objectives and manages project initiatives of strategic importance to the organization. Maintain industry trends and new technologies applicable to L3Harris products and mission solutions. Works on advanced, complex technical projects or business issues requiring state of the art technical or industry knowledge. Provides technical direction for the development, engineering, interfacing, integration, and testing of Payload systems with complex hardware/software attributes to include requirements elicitation, analysis and functional allocation, conducting systems requirements reviews, developing concepts of operation and interface standards, developing system architectures, and performing technical/non-technical assessment and management as well as end-to-end flow analysis.

Essential Functions:

  • Applies an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to plan, design, develop and verify affordable and innovative Electro-optical payload systems
  • Understands the complete mission that customers want to achieve
  • Evaluates business, customer, and operational needs to help define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces
  • Leads and coordinates various analysis to optimize payload system architecture
  • Resolves cross-functional technical issues
  • Lead teams to evaluate system performance
  • Provides technical coordination between external customer’s engineers and internal engineering groups to articulate technical issues
  • Prepares and presents technical information internally and externally that addresses specific subjects of interest
  • Advocates the customer’s critical needs to internal stakeholders
  • Provide technical direction for the development, integration, and testing of complex hardware/software systems
  • Lead and perform trade studies required to make both tactical and strategic technical decisions for programs
  • Provide mentoring, guidance and leadership to novice engineers


  • STEM Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 12 years of prior related experience or Graduate Degree with a minimum of 10 years or prior related experience
  • Experience leading technical teams of 20 or more through optical payload design or development
  • Experience as a Chief Engineer or Chief Systems Engineer
  • Experience with cost and schedule management, EVMS, or PMP certification
  • Experience developing payload architectures and spacecraft bus interfaces
  • Active DoD Secret security clearance required

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Masters/PhD in engineering or physics
  • Ability to communicate and interact with customers, including executives, functional, programmatic, and technical representatives
  • Experience as a Program Manager, Business Development Manager (or equivalent), and other related fields (Production Manager, Satellite Operations, etc.)
  • Ability to motivate and lead interdisciplinary teams in a manufacturing environment
  • Passionate about mentoring and knowledge transfer with a successful background in uplifting team members at all levels, both on an individual and team basis
  • Ability to partner with stakeholders and team leaders to identify mission gaps and develop system solutions which provide customer value
  • Experience applying technologies and capabilities in ways not previously anticipated to solve our customers’ ultimate objectives
  • Experience with creating and maintaining a Target Architecture, capability mapping, and technology roadmaps
  • Experience in operating as a prime provider for both exquisite space and small-sat opportunities
