Job Description:

The Software Quality Engineer (SWQE) is responsible for the Software Quality Assurance (SWQA) of products and services provided to our customers. This is accomplished through defined activities which ensure the quality of the software engineering processes that ultimately result in quality software products. These activities involve process-focused actions to establish and evaluate the processes that produce products and services, and ensure continuous improvement. This is performed throughout the entire development and production processes for software and firmware which include contract review, requirement definition, design generation, production, testing and operations and maintenance activities. The success of the software and firmware products depends on process compliance, product conformance, the quality of the product as well as the product’s ability to hit the market on time and budget.

The SWQE defines the processes to be implemented on assigned programs for complete oversight of the program activities. These processes are further broken down into tasks to allow collaboration with the program team to ensure continued compliance to all requirements, verification of a defect-free quality product that meets customer needs and monitoring of the processes and product for any trends which need addressed. The SWQE is responsible for proactive reporting of all known and potential issues and risks to the program team, management, and external customers as required.

Essential Functions:

A SWQE's tasks may include, but are not limited to the following (applies to both software and firmware products):

  • Interface with Quality, Engineering, Management, Customers (including customer representatives like FAA QRO, DCMA, etc.), Suppliers and Subcontractors to ensure contractual requirements are met
  • Review contract, statement of work, and subcontracts for understanding of all requirements in order to generate Basis of Estimates (BOEs) or general program planning of SWQA tasks on a program.
  • Develop and implement audit plans to assure compliance to internal requirements and external standards per program requirements
  • Manage budgets other Quality staff (Quality Engineers and Technicians).
  • Program interface for internal and external company audits.
  • Participate in and provide inputs on program plans, risk identification and mitigation, requirements, design, code, testing, deliverables, milestone reviews and non-conformance management.
  • Actively participate in and verify all change management process, Change Control Boards (CCBs), etc.
  • Monitor subcontractor process and products, verification of COTs and license control.
  • Generate metrics, perform trend analysis, facilitate Root Cause and Corrective Action activities to drive reduction in Cost of Poor Quality and drive 0 customer escapes.
  • Utilize defect tracking database for management of product issues and facilitation of Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) activities.
  • Support generation, review and verification of manual and automated tests to proactively discover any bugs or issues with the software prior to integration (Unit under test and test sets/scripts, etc.). Where applicable, perform informal testing prior to integration to flush out bugs early in the process.
  • Collaborate with Software Engineering to certify DevOps (CI/CD) pipelines used in development; Continue to monitor pipeline performance and re-certify when changes are rolled out.
  • Research new tools, technologies, and processes to drive process improvements in all aspects of the program life-cycle.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, or a related field, and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance principles and software development lifecycles.
  • Active Security Clearance (DoD Secret at a minimum, prefer TS/SCI)

Preferred Additional Skills: (These are additional skills and experience that would be preferred in ideal candidates but not a deal breaker)

  • Understanding of software configuration and change management practices.
  • Lean, Six Sigma, continuous improvement and AS 9100/ISO 9001 and AS9115 quality systems experience.
  • Travel as needed.
