Job Description:

Job Purpose:

As a System Safety Engineer, you will be required to develop and execute safety programs, and develop Safety Cases based on compelling safety arguments, lead and facilitate safety activities using suitable tools and techniques which apply to hazard identification and risk analysis on large integrated programs. Safety activities shall be formally documented in Safety Plans, and execution of the safety activities will result in a Safety Cases commensurate to the level of safety risk. The Safety Case shall be supported by artefacts such as Hazard Log and Hazard Analysis Reports.

You will also engage with internal and external stakeholders including the Commonwealth of Australia, New Zealand Defence Force and applicable sub-contractors to support execution of the Safety Program.


  • Provide system safety expertise through compliance with the L3HArris EMS ensuring safety risks are eliminated in the first instance, or where unable to be eliminated, the level of safety risk reduced so far as is reasonably practicable (SFAIRP).
  • Develop and maintain key safety artefacts including Safety Plan, Safety Arguments, Hazard Log, Hazard Assessment Reports, and develop Safety Cases in accordance with L3HArris EMS and the approved Safety Plan.
  • Plan, coordinate and facilitate the conduct of safety activities as defined in the Safety Plan, including hazard identification, hazard analysis and risk assessment.
  • Identify resource requirements to ensure ongoing technical, operational and safety support to the safety program.
  • Communicate and consult with stakeholders, accountable managers, and applicable regulators
  • Lead and facilitate System Safety Working Groups, Technical Reviews, and workshops pertaining to Safety and Human Factors.
  • Identify and assess human factors risks applicable to the operational capability seeking input from subject matter experts.
  • Ensure software safety analysis is integrated with the Safety Program.
  • Be part of an integrated engineering approach with emphasis on accountable performance.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and inclusive culture.
  • Develop and maintain highly effective working relationships within L3Harris including internal and external stakeholders, to ensure open and transparent communication and resolution of safety and human factors related issues.
  • Assist in the planning and building of organizational capacity of the System Safety Program through education and guidance on the application of the L3HArris Safety Management System contained within the EMS.

  • Effective and collaborative engagement with L3Harris staff, Contractor(s), Regulator(s) and the customer
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory standards, safety requirements, risk, environmental and any other applicable standards.


  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience or Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience.
  • Current Australian NV1 security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated practical experience as a system safety engineer within a safety regulated industry (e.g., Aviation, Rail, Oil and Gas, Defence).
  • Tertiary qualification in system safety, engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience applying industry best practice system safety analysis techniques/methodologies (e.g., ARP 4761, MIL-STD 882E, IEC-61508)
  • Demonstrated experience developing Safety Plans and Safety Cases for large scale, complex projects within a safety regulated industry.
  • Expertise in system safety engineering including execution of core system safety analysis techniques (including PHA, FHA, FTA, HAZOP, FMECA, Threat Barrier Analysis, Goal Structured Notation). Hands on experience using BowTie analysis would be highly desirable.
  • Understanding of systems engineering processes and the integrated approach to system safety engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Understanding human factors applications to support safety in design is highly desirable.
  • Effective and concise written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage stakeholders, foster relationships, facilitate partnerships and cooperation at all levels.
