About the role

L3Harris in Brighton are part of our Mission Avionics sector operating in the Aerospace domain specialising in airborne stores carriage release and electro-mechanical systems.

We are seeking a Senior Safety Engineer to join our Engineering team and be responsible for the assigned safety Engineering tasks and delivery of associated outputs in support of airborne product designs. As an important member of the Engineering team reporting to the Head of Systems, the role will suit an engineer looking to diversify their experience and work within a team to be part of varied projects to deliver optimised design solutions for release systems.

In addition to the assigned safety Engineering tasks, the role will also include the generation of Safety the policy process and procedures to underpin best practice and Engineering Functional Excellence.

What will the role involve:

  • Key Subject Matter focal point of contact for Safety to interact with internal and external customers on a technical level.
  • Decomposition of Safety Requirements to define Safety Management Plans.
  • Conduct Systems Hazard Analysis (SHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Common Mode Analysis (CMA) in support of design solution optimisation.
  • Undertake Particular Risk Analysis.
  • Provide expert safety input into the generation of Failure Modes Effects Analysis/ Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis.
  • Design Review Input and Assessment.
  • Organise and run Safety Working Groups
  • Generation of full suite of safety analysis/assessments and release formal technical artifacts in support of the Certificates of Design.
  • Development and definition of Safety departmental processes and procedures.
  • Provide advice and recommendations to Airworthiness and Design Signatories.

What you'll bring:


  • Substantial experience in an aerospace equipment and/or platform safety domain.
  • Expert in the conduct of the safety assessment process for airborne equipment and/or systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or aerospace Engineering or equivalent higher Engineering qualifications plus experience.
  • High competence with the understanding and application of Def-Stan 00-56, Mil-std 882 and/or SAE ARP4761.
  • Experience of working within Integrated Project Teams and matrix organisations.
  • Expert in the use of software tools for generating safety analysis.
  • Practical understanding of the Systems Engineering development lifecycle process (Requirements, Systems Design, Verification and Validation).
  • Strong communication skills with the focus on technical report writing and presentation of findings.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems in a timely manner to drive a compliant design solution.


  • Good knowledge of Reliability Analyses
  • Requirements Management, Verification Planning & Certification
  • Use of IBM Doors
  • Knowledge of airborne Store Carriage and Release systems.
  • Experience of DAOS and MAA Regulation Requirements
  • Experience as a Compliance Verification Engineer.
  • Chartered Engineer status (or be sufficiently qualified, trained and experienced to become so).
