Manager, Mechanical Engineering

Description:

As a Mechanical Engineering Manager, you will be in a dual-role manager position, involving both front-line management of a team of engineers and performance of individual productive work on programs. L3Harris Mechanical Engineering Managers possess the skills of a top-notch influencer, motivator, and leader who can grow a team of engineers while advancing their own career in a management role and in engineering leadership.

Essential Functions:

Engineering Individual Contributor

  • Design of complex and compact packaging solutions for ruggedized electronics.
  • Create solid models utilizing 3D parametric modeling software and create design documentation utilizing GD&T per ASME Y14.5
  • Requirements development, refinement, and compliance.
  • Generate test plans and test reports related to product performance (Brassboard, Design Verification, Qualification, etc.)
  • Lead and direct test activities in all phases of product development cycle.
  • Lead failure investigations using structured tools (8D, Fishbone, Cause & Effect, etc.).
  • Generate material for and participate in design reviews for all phases of the product development cycle.
  • Act as technical interface to internal and external customers.
  • Provide inputs (material and labor estimates) for Requests for Proposals (RFPs).

Front-Line Manager

  • Assist Development Engineering manager in defining, maintaining, and improving the department’s development processes and best practices.
  • Ensure staff are properly using best practices and the development processes on their assigned programs.
  • Provide regular labor and resource planning to support programs and activities.
  • Actively support all phases of hiring activities for the team
  • Support management of morale and work to proactively mitigate attrition.
  • Support succession planning and identification/development of key talent.
  • Carry out performance management and goal setting of all direct reports, both formal and informal. Provide meaningful, constructive feedback to ensure the development of each staff member.
  • Lead performance improvement plan formulation and execution as needed.
  • Proactively support reward and recognition activities for the staff members. Develop and submit merit recommendations during the yearly merit review cycle.
  • Perform conflict resolution between teammates as required.
  • Take an active role in the professional development of each staff member. May include identification, guidance, and support of formal training, on-the-job training, mentoring, and/or new program assignments.
  • Proactively mentor, coach, assist, and/or provide additional help to engineers in the analysis, design, build, integration, test, validation, verification, documentation, and/or maintenance of products.
  • Foster an individual and team culture of Continuous Improvement (CI)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline with minimum of (9) years combined experience in engineering and leadership. Minimum of (7) years of experience with a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and various CAD/CAE tools is required.
  • The individual will have a history of setting high goals and standards for self, others, and the organization, be dissatisfied with average performance and assume full responsibility for results.
  • The individual will be a self-starter, identify and understand issues, problems, and opportunities, effectively manage one's time and resources, and be a team player.
  • Strong focus on originating action to improve existing conditions and processes, identifying improvement opportunities, generating ideas, and implementing solutions are also characteristics of a strong candidate. Individuals will also demonstrate professional and ethical behavior in all business dealings.
  • Outstanding communication (both verbal and written), collaboration, time management, presentation, and organizational skills
  • Ability to conduct reviews of mechanical designs, stackup analyses, and engineering change notices
  • Experience with creating engineering estimates, plans, and BoE’s
  • Must be a U.S. Person

Required Skills:

  • Strong engineering fundamentals and analytical background with the ability to understand and guide analyses and offer solutions related to mechanical, electro-mechanical, and opto-mechanical systems. Types of analysis include thermal, structural, and dynamic.
  • Solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturability
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes related to mechanical design (machined, molded, diecast, etc.)
  • Ability to perform Dynamic and Static stress analysis
  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as Solid Edge, AutoCAD, etc.
  • Team Player with excellent communication skills to work effectively across different engineering disciplines.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Understand configuration management as it applies to product documentation.
  • Capable of managing and working in an environment that is fast paced, demanding, with a focus on problem resolution and process improvement
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with other leadership functions across the organization including Operations, Quality, Program Management, and Business Development
  • Ability to obtain security clearance if required

Preferred Additional Skills/Experience:

  • Experience with temperature sensors, MEMs accelerometers, differential pressure sensors, and Gyros.
  • Finite Element Analysis experience with ANSYS, LS-DYNA, or others.
  • Design for extreme environments (Vibration, Shock, Temperature, Temperature & Humidity)
  • Strong understanding of power spectral density and SRS testing per relevant military standards (MIL-STD-331, MIL-STD-810, and others).
  • Energetic materials interfacing/testing (EFDIs, LEEFIs, Lead Charges, Boosters).
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-1316, MIL-STD-1901, & RCC-319
  • Experience with Root Cause Corrective Action tools and processes
  • Active Security Clearance
